Tag Rugby in Dorset
Rural inclusion scheme a great success in Dorset Press Release, February 9 2004
The word of rugby is being spread across Dorset thanks to a new rural rugby inclusion scheme for school children.
In October 2003 the Rugby Football Union and Dorchester RFC under 7s coach Paul Newbery piloted a scheme which introduced tag rugby to 120 year five and six boys and girls in four junior schools in the Beaminster Pyramid - Broadwindsor, Salway Ash, Parrett and Axe and Sticklands. The schools were selected because of their geographical position which ultimately excluded them from participating in rugby at club level.
The rugby sessions were so popular that Newbury and the RFU have teamed up again to deliver more courses across the county.
The first of the six-week courses kicked-off last week with Greenford Church of England School, Thorncombe School St.Mary's, Chalmouth School and Marshwood Church of England School taking part.
Later this month, Underhill School, Tophill School and Southwell will also come on board.
Newbery said: "I have found it very satisfying as a coach to see so many new children introduced to rugby, having an enjoyable time and having so much enthusiasm towards the training and games.
"I hope that this enthusiasm can be channelled into future inter-school games and establish closer links with the local rugby clubs."
