Both sides and all spectators held a
minute's silence in memory of Toby Hearne a Chippenham
U17 player who was tragically killed just before Christmas.
Dorchester are notorious slow starters,
but today was different and they started confidently,
this assisted by the fact that they didn't concede
a penalty for 15 minutes, instead it was the hosts
who were the culprits early on. A series of penalties
in their half allowed Dorchester to exert early pressure
and from a series of line outs in the home 22, allowed
the visitors to create attacking mauls and they were
rewarded when prop Joe Underhill got the important
touchdown. Harry Smith added the conversion from out
wide. From the restart Bournemouth pressed but were
unable to get through, a loose pass was intercepted
by Max Buckler who ran 70 meters before off loading
to Kieran Fry in support who had the easiest of run
ins, unfortunately the conversion drifted wide.
At this point Dorchester were by far
the dominant side, and with Bournemouth conceding
penalties at will it all seemed one sided, however
a penalty from half way by Dorchester failed to make
touch, with the Bournemouth winger alert to this he
ran 50 meters as Dorchester looked on score 5-12.
Back came the visitors playing some of their best
rugby so far this season, with some great offloading
Dorchester kept the ball alive a short pass by Buckler
to Will Holmes saw the latter carve open the home
defence and in under the posts for a converted score.
Once again the visitors allowed Bournemouth back in
the game with some poor communication in defence allowing
the home side to get a converted try to pull back
to 12-19. That however wasn't the final score of the
half; with Bournemouth continuing to infringe Smith
stepped up and slotted a 30-metre penalty half time
12-22.
The second was a scrappy affair and
it was Dorchesters turn to concede numerous penalties,
(the feeling in both camps was it more of the referee
trying to even up the penalty camp) consequently no
continuity was allowed and with Bournemouth turning
down the opportunity for a number of simple kicks
instead opting to go for a try they were ultimately
disappointed as all they got was an unconverted score,
and with Dorchesters defence operating well they couldn't
break it down, and Dorchester were worthy victors
in another well fought contest.
Director of Rugby Steve Underhill was
a pleased man after the match and the result sees
his side leapfrog Bournemouth to 4th place in the
league.
