The record will show that Dorchester’s outside backs scored all seven tries. It was however, the total domination of the forwards in both scrum and line out that allowed the backs the freedom to attack from all over the park.
In almost perfect conditions Dorchester chose to play into the breeze in the first half and were immediately on the defensive with Frome using their big forwards to carry the ball up close. Good work from the Dorchester back row turned the ball over and fullback Rich Bament set off down the blindside from deep inside his own twenty two. He fed winger James Baker who out paced the defence to score under the posts. The conversion was a formality and the home side had the early lead. The Frome forwards were competing well in the loose but were having a torrid time in the set piece. Time after time they were shunted backwards and so were denied any clean possession and hence were unable to put any pressure on the Dorchester defence. A simple penalty from Bament on twenty minutes was followed by two tries from winger James Spensley, one of which was converted, and Dorchester went into the break twenty two points up.
Now playing with the elements Dorchester were looking to improve their points difference and soon stretched their lead further. James Spensley made a clean break through midfield and, despite being on a hat trick, fed Gareth Biddle for the easiest of tries under the posts. Once again Bament added the extras. Spensley, however, need not have worried as he was soon on the end of another flowing move and crossed in the corner. With the game won, Dorchester lost concentration for a period, not helped by the fact that the referee, worried by the pressure being exerted on the Frome front row, insisted that the scrums went uncontested. Bament kicked a penalty from half way to keep the scoreboard ticking over then lit up the final moments of the game with two vintages bursts down either wing both of which led to tries from James Spensley, his fourth and fifth of the match. Fittingly Bament converted the last try with a splendid kick from the touchline to end proceedings.
