DORCHESTER finally produced the performance they
have been threatening to deliver for several weeks
as they defeated second-placed Walcot at Coburg
Road.
Walcot arrived very late but made a bright start,
using their big forwards to drive into the county
town defence.
Awarded a penalty, they kicked into the corner
and drove over from the ensuing line-out to take
the lead. An excellent conversion followed and it
looked as though the hosts were in for a tough afternoon.
The first sign that Walcot were not going to have
it all their own way came with the first scrum of
the game when Dorchester drove them off their own
ball, something that was to be repeated throughout
the remainder of the match.
A penalty from Rich Bament got the hosts on the
scoreboard before a perfectly executed blindside
move allowed Toby Waddington to touch down in the
right-hand corner.
Walcot retook the lead with a carbon- copy of their
first try, driving over again from a five-metre
line-out. This time, however, the conversion was
missed.
But it was not long before Dorchesters advantage
was restored. Lee Harvey sliced his way through
the visiting midfield but was hauled down a yard
short of the line.
As the centre tried to offload, the ball was knocked
away by the tackler lying on the ground and the
referee awarded a penalty try. Baments conversion
was a formality and Dorchester went into the break
with a narrow three-point lead.
The visitors, realising that they were unable to
dominate up front, switched tactics and started
to run what little ball they were winning.
They did manage to mount several dangerous attacks
but because they were coming from deep in their
own half, Dorchester were able to snuff them out
before they threatened the try-line.
The hosts on the other hand, were camped in Walcot
territory for long periods, and able to put the
squeeze on the visiting pack. As a result they added
three tries, all from close-range scrums.
Carl Mitchell powered over for two either side
of one for Joe Gower, with all three being converted
by Bament.
In among the home tries, Walcot did manage a third
try of their own, following a quickly taken penalty
while most of the home side were discussing the
decision with the referee.
