Starting a sequence of games against those from that side of the county, we started what would be our last home game for a month.
Those that played know who they are, sometimes it's best not to name names. Last minute check.before kick off, full team, check, subs, check, right players in the right positions, check, team full of.people that train...not quite.
The sun was out, the fans were there in their tens, and the rugby was fantastic. From kick off we set about the big boys pitch like men possessed, even one of our older members looked like a Tesco finest orange rather then the market value he normally is, in turn causing his partner in crime at the heart of the scrum to.have one of his better games too. We scrummed heroically, we rucked ferociously, we mauled like demons and occasionally we let the backs have a play to.
With no fewer then four people making their debut I was amazed at how free flowing our rugby was, and the was as fun to play in as it was to watch. Just one problem, East Dorset hadn't read the script, then again I don't think we had either. Time after time we cut them open, no one could predict where our flyhalf was going to run, poking holes with the regularity of a needle and thread, and proving to be more slippery then a jellied eel covered in ky. The only problem is we couldn't be clinical with our chances, even ignoring a three man overlap to to it alone and drop the ball inches short of the line. Therein laid the differences between the two teams. Despite being camped in their half for most of the first half we only had one try to show for it, a period of sustained pressure finding one of.our larger second rowers tripping over the line and hurting his knee whilst getting the score...no conversion. Then right on half time they mount their first real attack, we miss our first tackle and they score out wide before getting the extras too.
Half time 5 - 7
The second half went like the first, with only team looking like winning, and after failing to keep composed again we had to settle for a cheek three in front of the posts. Failing to take our chances caused us to panic and chase the game, our indicipline kicked in and repeated cheating sorry infringements at the breakdown saw one of our own spending 10th in the bin. This allowed East back in the game, but we held firm, kept faith, and back to full strength still led 8 - 7.
Sadly the game had to stop due to serious injury to one of the East numbers, and after a lengthy break we swapped pitches. Having made sure we ran drills and kept warm despite the moaning it paid off as from the restart we ran the length of the pitch with almost everyone touching the ball we scored in the corner to take a 13 - 7 lead. Again no extras.
All we could do was lose this ourselves, but sadly that's exactly what we did. Firstly we failed to keep calm and kept giving away penalty after penalty...we would work our way into their half, then they'd kick us back and have the line out too. Sadly we blinked first, missed only our second tackle of the game, they got their second try and.converted to win.
Flyhalf got man of the match, and sadly I can't remember who.dick of the day was.
