Dorchester travelled to a traditionally strong Oakmeadians side, buoyed by last weeks cup victory over Blandford in this Southern Counties one fixture. Despite the score line, this was probably the county town sides most impressive performance of the season, with players from one to fifteen displaying real heart and determination against a very powerful and organised Oakmedians side.
The first half in particular was a fiercely competitive affair, especially between the two packs, in which the game did threaten to boil over a number of times. Despite this both sides were prepared to play open and attractive rugby from the start. The home side made a number of breaks in the first quarter, using their powerful pack to good use sucking in Dorchester's cover defence and then spreading the ball wide, were Oakmedians back three reveled in the open space. However Dorchester's defence was excellent, competing at the breakdown at every opportunity, often spoiling quick ball for the home side and winning several turnovers in the process.
Dorchester scored first with a relatively straight forward penalty kick from fly half John Firkin who enjoyed an excellent game. To their credit Oakmedians replied immediately with a try of their own, when after several thwarted attempts near Dorchester's tryline, the ball was spun wide for their winger to dive over in the corner.
The game at this stage started to get a bit niggly, with both sides being reduced to fourteen men for ten minutes. It was during this period that Oakmedians scored again, although they were made to work hard for the score with some fierce defending from the visitors. The home side added a further penalty just before half time to make the score 15-3 to Oakmedians.
The second half was again extremely competitive with both packs performing strongly. Oakmeadians had the edge with their strong back row in particular showing speed and strength whenever they had ball in hand. With ten minutes to go in the match with the score 25-3 , Dorchester seemed to run out of steam. The home side capitalized on this with ruthless efficiency, running in three late tries to take the points in this entertaining game.
Despite the score it seems that this Dorchester side has definitely turned the corner. Their seems to be a real team spirit and confidence emerging, which they will need with the league leaders Trowbridge visiting Coburg Road next week.
