Lee Harvey & Dave Gower
WINNING COMBINATION: Dorchester’s Lee Harvey, left, and Dave Gower

The score would suggest that this was a routine win for Dorchester, actually this was far from the case. A proud and committed Puddletown made the hosts fight for every yard and their furious rucking caused Dorchester problems all afternoon.

On clear but chilly afternoon Puddletown elected to take first use of the stiff breeze but it was Dorchester who were straight onto the attack. A simple penalty from Rich Bament got the scoreboard moving before winger Jack Elliott sprinted in twenty metres for the opening try. Dorchester were totally dominant at scrum and lineout but Puddletown were competing well at the breakdown. Two further tries from James Spensley and Rich Bament in the dying moments of the half and Dorchester went into the break leading eighteen points to nil.

Puddletown now had to face the wind and, to add to their troubles, were now reduced to fourteen men. Their centre having to go to hospital with a nasty gash to his face. Dorchester continued to dominate both possession and territory and scored six further tries Mat Chalker crossed after a series of forward drives, James Newsam touched down from backrow move and Callum Hawkins got the benefit of a pushover try. Rich Bament and Jack Elliott both added their second tries of the afternoon before Tom Gower scored possibly the best try of them all when he finished off a flowing move featuring a burst and perfectly timed scoring pass from hooker Mat Chalker. Unfortunately Rich Bament did not have his best day with the boot and could only convert two of the nine tries.

All in all this was a good rounded team performance but Dorchester will need to up the ante for stiffer challenges to come.
