Dorchester kept the pressure on at the top of the league with a routine six try victory at Salisbury on Saturday.
Having only played twice since before Christmas, Dorchester looked distinctly rusty in the first half and struggled to convert their obvious superiority into points. A first 1st Team try for Jim Rossiter following good work by James Spensley and Gareth Biddle was converted by Rich Bament to give the visitors an early lead. Several more chances were created but not taken before a clever switch of direction by John Firkin and a typical scything run by Jack Elliott saw the winger cross for his tenth try of the season. Bament again converted for a fourteen point half time lead.
As the second half progressed Dorchester began to put their game together, winning plenty of quick ball varying their attack intelligently. Captain Dave Gower was next on the scoresheet, on hand to support James Spensley’s clean break through midfield. Rich Bament was then the beneficiary of a two man overlap to stretch the lead even further. Salisbury competed well up front but were outgunned by Dorchester’s pace out wide and as the host tired Jack Elliott and Dave Gower added another try apiece. Bament converted two of the four second half tries to complete the scoring.
A good day for Dorchester got even better when it was revealed that fellow promotion candidates Weymouth and Bridport had fought out a twelve all draw.
