Dorchester followed their encouraging win at Corsham with another excellent win at home to Oldfield Old Boys. Despite several late changes including a call up for veteran scrum half Mike Gannaway Dorchester produced another good team performance with all elements of the side performing and contributing to the result.
On a beautiful autumn afternoon Dorchester kicked off defending the Dorchester end. The early exchanges were inconclusive but the home scrum and lineout were functioning well and both defences looked solid. Fifteen minutes in and a stray kick from the Oldfield fly half found Dorchester winger Jamie Morgan who beat three defenders to score in the right hand corner. Rich Bament, playing at No 8 due to the enforced reoganisation, added the conversion
Minutes later Dorchester’s other winger James Baker cut through the middle, desperate defence halted his progress but his offload was picked up by a scavenging James Newsam, who scored the simplest of tries. Bament again converted.
The visitors were stung into action and scored two unconverted tries of their own. At this point it looked as though the match was going to really close.
Dorchester however, upped the pace and intensity of their game to open up a comfortable gap by half time. Firstly, stand in captain Steve Hodgson scored from a perfectly executed front peel and then Jamie Morgan scored the try of the game, finishing off a sweeping move that seemed to involve almost every Dorchester player.
Leading by sixteen points at the break Dorchester were determined to close out the game as soon as possible and an early try by James Baker did just that. With the result no longer in doubt the game seemed to loose its shape and a bit of niggle crept into the proceedings.
The home side added further tries though Tom Gower and James Newsam while Oldfield also managed a consolation try when their forwards crashed over from a five metre penalty.
A first ever league win over Oldfield was a just reward for excellent execution of the basics and a willingness to support the man in possession.
Acheson Construction man of the match: Tom Gower who covered every inch of the pitch.
