Wimborne 25 v 5 Dorchester

Dorchester slipped to their second defeat in a row when they were given a lesson in finishing by Wimborne. The game itself was fiercely competitive and evenly contested for most of the eighty minutes. Wimborne however, took advantage of Dorchester’s mistakes to run in four tries before a late response from the visitors made the scoreboard a little less one-sided.

Dorchester had the upper hand in the first quarter but again lacked penetration in midfield. Wimborne, on the other hand scored on virtually their first trip to the Dorchester twenty two. Two defenders went for the same man allowing winger Andrews a clear run to the line. Minutes later the home side added a simple penalty to stretch the lead to eight points. Dorchester went back onto the attack but a turnover and a searing break from the hosts fly half led to a second try, scored by Brokenshire. Again the conversion was missed but Wimborne went into the break thirteen points to the good.

The second period started disastrously for Dorchester. Fullback Rich Bament suffered a serious ankle injury after being caught at the bottom of a ruck and, from the resulting turnover, Andrews sprinted in for his second, and Wimborne’s third try. The resulting delay as Bament was taken to hospital meant that the closing stages of the game were played out in the gathering gloom.

The Dorchester midfield gifted their opponents another try when a sloppy pass was picked off by King and run in from fifty metres. The conversion points were added and Dorchester were now playing to restore some pride. To their credit they kept going right to the end and gained some reward when Matt Read crossed in the left hand corner following a quick penalty and some slick passing. Jones’ attempted conversion from the touchline came back off the crossbar to sum up Dorchester’s day.
