We started playing down the slope (to give kinger and peeley a chance) getting the better of most of the play, which was mostly in the North dorset 22. Some very good scrumaging (mostly due to complex equations involving the slope, the heavy weight forwards and newtons first law of gravity) from dorch made it easy for the backs to get good ball but dorset defended well (as our backs don’t train and couldn’t do anything with all the possession they had).
After 15 min with some great work from the forwards (amazing how missed tackles by ndorset translate into good forward work by dorch), before kinger got the ball just inside the 22, ran in brushing off tackles to score under the posts (see previous explainations regarding, slope, weight, gravity and missed tackles), pryce then converted (TC having shamefully been stripped of kicking responsibilities).
The next 10- 15 mins where fairly even (peely and kinger were struggling with the walk up the slope to set pieces) but dorch were still camped in ndorsets half, but they scored a try from some well worked moves, before a penelty was given for diving over and dorset kicked the pen.
After about 30 mins, good support play from the forwards (having just enjoyed a good rest letting ndorset back into the game) followed a good drive for all most 15 metre before woods was on hand to put the ball down on the line for the second try (despite most probably having been offside), again pryce converting (although now his head was getting a little bigger and his scrum cap looked a little tighter). At halftime the score was 14-8, but both times ndorset got in the dorch half they scored.
The second half was very much like the first but with ndorset kicking to try give their backs chances to score (so in fact it was completely different) but dorch defended very well. ndorset missed a pen but never really had any clear cut chances, even though dorch where giving away pens in midfield (given woody was off the field of play the pen count appears shocking until you take into account we her playing against the slope and our larger forwards found it difficult to role away). In the final 5 mins, cree damaged his wrist (although this doesn’t excuse the quality of his passing in the preceeding 75 minutes) so a change was made at scrum half, dorch then had a scrum 15 metre from ndorsets line.
The scrum was held well, keel at 8 picked up and drove towards the line before deciding to simply pop the ball (in reality the ball must have knocked out of his hands in the tackle) to new scrum half clark who dived (major over celebration) over for a try. Pryce missed the conv (slight deflating of ego) but that was the end of the game.
All in all dorch where pretty strong through out and defended well – however we need to work on staying on our feet at the break down. Man of the match was newson who had an outstanding game, but he was pushed very closely by mike solway (who we are glad to have back) and sam keel (who we are glad is leaving).
At the end of the game sam keel was given a yard of ale to drink as it was his last game as did newsom too (who we are hoping it was his last game).
